VITA: Taking Steps Towards Financial Stability
In our commitment to helping families become more financially stable and increase their assets, United Way of Williamson County manages VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites in Georgetown, Hutto, Leander and Taylor.
VITA sites, open from January through April, offer free tax help to people who earn $54,000 or less annually and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Clients often include minimum-wage earners, those who may be homeless, self-employed, and the elderly or people with disabilities.
In addition to informing clients about valuable tax credits for which they may be eligible, VITA sites provide a safe alternative to high-fee tax preparation services and predatory lenders offering expensive refund anticipation loans. VITA sites also help many working families access valuable tax credits such as Earned Income Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits.

Community Collaboration for Greater Community Impact
United Way of Williamson County is focused on helping individuals and families achieve financial stability. In working to achieve that goal, United Way of Williamson County began working strategically to focus our efforts on ensuring that the low-to-moderate income residents of Williamson County are able to increase their income and their assets.
In the fall of 2009, United Way volunteers brought together a unique gathering of dedicated staff and volunteers from the IRS, AARP, Catholic Charities of Central Texas, WBC Opportunities and Foundation Communities to determine the best way to collaborate in helping families in Williamson County become more financially stable.
In early 2010 the group named themselves the Williamson County Financial Stability Coalition and agreed their first area of focus would be the increased accessibility of free tax preparation services to low-to-moderate income families and elderly in Williamson County.
Since that time, the Coalition has maintained its focus on improving the economic means of Williamson County residents by increasing their access to free income tax preparation services. Tax preparation sites have been added in Hutto, Georgetown, Leander and Taylor, and the WCFSC is currently working to offer satellite opportunities in several rural communities in Williamson County.
With the support of corporate sponsors, United Way of Williamson County is able to provide financial support not only for the VITA sites, but the Williamson County Financial Stability Coalition.
